Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) affects each individual differently. Allergies, asthma, smoke, air pollution, heat, humidity, dust, aerosol, cosmetic and cleaning sprays, as well as common mildew or mold spores, all contribute to an individual's response to IAQ. These factors, either individually or in combination, are around each of us daily, with often the only difference being the level of concentration. When placed together in one location, standard measurements of these factors may not apply.

GT Housing HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems are not centralized systems with common open duct works spreading the air throughout the various rooms and locations such as many students are used to in their homes. Each apartment or traditional hall room is provided their tempered air from a fan coil unit attached to a closed loop central plant supply that either provides hot water or chilled water through a closed isolated set of coils. These coils have a blower taking the room air through a filter that spreads the residual temperature off those coils out across the room in the form of heat or cold depending upon the time of year.

When they first arrive on campus, many students have to personally adjust their living style while also dealing with the closed environment within their room and how this affects them with respect to their personal indoor air quality. Factors that differ from their home environment may affect asthma, allergies, sinuses and headaches. GT is in an urban area subject to a significant amount of air pollution from traffic, aerosols, high humidity, spores, airborne particulates, compounds, cleaning agents, dust kicked up by room and hallway traffic, pesticides and other factors that may cause personal discomfort during the adjustment process. The move in process is very disruptive to all the particulates in a building and this affects many residents' personal comfort for the short term until they settle back down. Doors are opened more often during the move in process, boxes are opened and closed, and furniture is moved, mixing particulates across the areas. Coupled with heat and humidity, this affects us all. The list of items suggested for residents' stay at GT Housing includes items some residents need to decide on for their personal indoor air quality needs. These include but are not limited to humidifiers, HEPA air cleaners, ionizers and dehumidifiers which all require proper operation and service/maintenance in accordance with manufactures recommendations to be most effective.
